There is a need for a secure and open infrastructure for many things. Freescale has demonstrated a gateway for the IoT(Internet of Things) gateway services. They have demonstrated a hardware platform which will form the foundation of the one box connect at the Free Scale Technology Forum 2014.

Freescale demonstrates an IoT gateway

This IoT gateway is a flexible hardware platform which will be equipped with multi-party software. The IoT series to end-users in a home, business or other location will be provided with ease. This will help to support the rapid development of a very huge array of innovative IoT services. For Freescale this platform`s demonstration is a very huge milestone in the Freescale`s one box initiative. Freescale has worked with Oracle and ARM to develop this initiative.

The focus is on the creation on a secure, standardized and open infrastructure model for the delivery of IoT services. The platform is powered by the Freescale MX6 applications processor which is built on ARM Cortex A9 core. The platform runs on the Oracle Java SE Embedded and is suitable for basic networking and sensor connectivity. The solution also supports Bluetooth low energy, Wi-Fi and 802.15.4 wireless interfaces.

Let us have a look on the key features on the product platform which is to be released:

  • Gateway is Fan-less on low power with MX 6 series processor.
  • 802.11b/g/n support out of the box with Bluetooth low energy and ZigBee protocol(802.15.4) accessories and software available
  • Pre-integrated Oracle software
  • ARM Sensinode Nano services which provides end-to-end web services optimized for the resource constrained edge nodes.

This dual core MX6 processor based hardware platform is priced at $159 for the base model. It will be available for the order in September in 2014. The version of the IoT platform built on QorIQ LS series processors will be available on Q4 2014. Surprisingly this gateway platform will offer gigabit line rate Ethernet and PCIe connectivity. The additional wireless connectivity options includes the 4G/LTE and 802.11ac for edge nodes which requires high-speed data transport and efficient packet routing.

We will be looking forward to more such hardware platforms from Freescale Semiconductor. Stay tuned on Technary.
